Response of for What would happen if the military staged a coup

When asked what would happen if the military staged a coup, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi responded as follows:

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s response:

“This is something almost everyone is worried about. Currently, Myanmar is governed within the framework of the 2008 Constitution.

To remove the NLD government, it cannot be done according to the Constitution—it would require violating or abolishing the Constitution (an act of treason).

And if they go that far, the price to pay would not be worth it.

Another thing is that, in the past five years, the people of this country have tasted a degree of freedom that they hadn’t experienced in the previous 50 years.

So, if a coup were to happen, there would be a very strong political backlash, and it could lead to widespread unrest and chaos beyond imagination.

She gave this response during a video conference held by the Council on Foreign Relations UK, in response to a question about whether a military coup could happen in Myanmar.
